Q: I am trying to get our family tree together so I can get my indian card. Do you have any suggestions on how to track down my family and a good way to keep record of it?
A: There are a whole lot of genealogy sites available to us, but I'd start with
FamilySearch.org and
Ancestry.com.
Ancestry.com is by far and away the most popular of genealogical research sites. It was already famous but recent television show "Who Do You Think You Are?", featured this site pretty prominently.
As far as good way to keep track of it, I'd suggest you look at a good genealogy program. There are several that are free and that are loaded down with nice features.
The first one that comes to mind is Legacy. PAF is also a very popular
genealogy software program, with a big following....lots of fans!
As for getting started, here is a link that will walk you through the beginning steps.
FamilySearch.org/learn/getting_startedThere you will find some very simple steps to follow, including your first steps, find and sharing information, and later finding the more challenging information
These resources should put you well on your way to researching and discovering your family tree. Watch out though. This stuff can become addicting!
All in a good way of course.
Best,
Michael Boyter
